FOMIC Software Engineering Students on Internship at Molyko, Buea
At FOMIC Polytechnic University, learning is not confined to classrooms—it is an ongoing, hands-on journey of discovery, innovation, and real-world problem-solving. The School of Engineering and Technology, through its Software Engineering program, provides students with practical opportunities to apply their technical knowledge in professional environments. One such initiative is the internship program currently taking place in Molyko, Buea, where FOMIC’s software students are gaining valuable industry experience

Turning Knowledge into Innovation
The internship at Molyko brings together a diverse group of final-year and mid-level students specializing in Software Development, Computer Networking, and Information Systems Engineering. During their placement, students work with local tech firms, startups, and digital service providers to design, develop, and deploy functional software applications that address real-life challenges in business, education, and community services.
Through these internships, students participate in all stages of the software development lifecycle—from system analysis, coding, and testing, to deployment and maintenance. They use modern programming languages such as Python, Java, C#, PHP, and JavaScript, while learning to apply agile methodologies, version control tools like Git, and collaborative project management techniques.
Practical Experience in the Field
Under the guidance of experienced engineers and industry mentors, interns tackle real-world projects that mirror the professional expectations of the modern IT sector. Some work on web and mobile application development, others on database design, cybersecurity solutions, or network configuration and maintenance.
Dr. Ibrahim Kofi Fuseini, Head of the School of Engineering and Technology, explains:
“At FOMIC, we don’t just teach technology—we create technologists. This internship helps students transition from theoretical learners to practical innovators who can solve real problems in Cameroon’s growing digital economy.”
The Molyko tech ecosystem provides an ideal environment for this growth. The neighborhood’s blend of educational institutions, internet cafés, and emerging tech startups gives students the chance to collaborate, experiment, and experience the dynamics of professional teamwork.
Building Professional Competence and Soft Skills
Beyond technical mastery, the internship focuses on developing essential soft skills such as communication, time management, teamwork, and critical thinking. Students are required to present weekly progress reports, defend project milestones, and participate in peer code reviews. These activities enhance their confidence, presentation abilities, and accountability—skills vital for their future careers in software engineering.
Many interns also take the opportunity to attend local tech meetups and hackathons organized by the Buea tech community, often referred to as “Silicon Mountain.” Exposure to this innovation-driven environment helps them build networks, discover new technologies, and understand the entrepreneurial side of software development.
Student Perspectives and Impact
Students describe their experience as both challenging and inspiring.
“This internship has taught me how to translate classroom knowledge into working systems,” says a third-year software engineering student. “It’s exciting to see my code actually solving a client’s problem.”
Another adds,
“Working with real clients pushes us to be more creative and disciplined. It’s no longer about passing exams—it’s about building solutions that work.”
Preparing Tomorrow’s Tech Leaders
Through this internship initiative, FOMIC Polytechnic University reinforces its mission to produce industry-ready graduates equipped with the skills and mindset required in the modern digital world. The program nurtures innovation, entrepreneurship, and technological confidence—qualities that define tomorrow’s tech leaders.
As the students continue their internship journey in Molyko, Buea, they represent FOMIC’s broader vision: empowering young minds to transform knowledge into impact, technology into opportunity, and ideas into sustainable digital solutions for the future.
